Basically, it is a traditional Japanese house with tatami mats on floor and futons for beds. You arrive and are shown around the ryokan and given green tea to relax from a long journey. The room you are given is where you dine and sleep; so first they serve you dinner, then you go to the communial bathroom (more on that later). Then whilst you're gone, they sneak into your room, clear the table and lay out your futon beds. There is always a yukata(Japanese dressing gown) in your room for you, which you can wear after having a bath.
The ryokan will always have time slots for having baths and a lock-in time for which you much be back at the ryokan by in the evening. In the morning, whilst your brushing your teeth, they've snuck in again and removed your futon and laid out breakfast. We love the experience!
